Went for a drive to have a look at this place and it is nothing special. We walked through the area in under 30 mins. Was a long way to go for nothing. Shops in the street selling food and other bits and pieces.

Daxi (Ta Shee) Old Street is located at Taoyuan on the way to the airport. It is a long street with lots of old buildings with ancient architectural style. There are lots of antique stores, toufu shops, shops selling incenses and sandalwood, souvenir shops, shops selling traditional cakes and cafes etc. Look out for the many Chinese temples dotted along the street. We were there in the morning, hence most of the shops were closed. The shops usually open from 11 am onwards till late at night. Walk all the way to the end of the street and take in the sight of the mountain-side over looking the bridge and river-bed. Avoid festive seasons as there are many Chinese temples there which will be crowded during important Chinese festival. Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring an umbrella in case of sun or rain.

Daxi old street is still not too bad.....but I would not rate it as an excellent placeInteresting due to the existence of the old shophouses which dated back to Qing dynasty, despite many shops were already "redesigned" facade and I doubted those were designed by the time during the Japanese occupational era.The best thing about Daxi is its Tofu shops. Not far from the Daxi old street , there is a Japanese era bushido hall which is now used as part of Daxi town council building.

A scent of the old Taiwan.A lot of firecrackers during one the many festivals on a hot and sticky Sunday.Better avoid it if there is any Chinese celebration in sight!

Daxi is a lovely mountain town some 30 miles outside Taipei towards the Taoyuan International Airport. It retains the "old style" ambience of a bustling Taiwanese village with shops and restaurants to delight all. If you have the opportunity to visit this enjoyable place you should find a taxi to take a 15 minute ride up into the hills to an authentic Taiwanese farm restaurant "Chicken Cuisine" telephone 03-38823333. There we enjoyed one of our best meals in decades with fresh farm chicken and vegetables all served in a crowded, rustic farm setting.
