I went to two concerts this week, and I was impressed with the acoustics. On Thursday, there was chamber music and on Sunday, the ESO played. This was my first time to attend classical concerts in Asia and I noticed some differences from those I've attended in Europe and North America. There was a fairly small crowd on Thursday night, and after the concert, the audience was enthusiastic; the Oliver Schnyder trio obliged by playing three encores. Likewise at the Sunday concert , the ESO played a couple of short movements. This hardly happens in Toronto and at bigger concert halls in Europe. The young woman beside me said that they clap and clap, and the musicians play:) The organ IS the centerpiece. The hall is spacious and the audience can enter from three sides; however, perhaps I'm not familiar with Taiwanese architecture and art, the concert hall itself didn't leave a very deep impression - no stained glass, classical columns and paintings and murals like those found in European halls. But then many of the newer concert halls in North America are also pretty nondescript. The whole square is definitely beautiful. At the National theatre across the way, there are always dancers rehearsing. It's very pleasant to visit and walk through the park. When I went during the day, the plum trees were in bloom.
