I visited Dan jiangkou Hubei Province as I had to meet fellow engineers of the local huge Aluminium smelter there. Smelters are placed where cheap electric power is abundant and the Dam can do this and much more. The Dam was one of the first very important infrastructures in the roaring 50ies for the newly born Communist State. The dam creates a water level difference of 163 meters, enough to move at their maximum the water turbines creating electric energy for the state company named Han jiangkou that delivers power to the smelter I visited. This water level difference is also exploited to create the force to send water through hundreds of kms up north and water Beijin as well! When you meet local people of my age, they are very proud of their Dam, as all the previous generation of their parents worked hard to build the Dam and serve the State that needed badly energy (and hydro energy is also a green energy). As the rivers before and after the dam are also used by barges and bulk carrier ships, they have installed something that maybe there is no second in this world! A mega crane that hoists ships up these 163 meters and unites the merchant water line again! You can see enough on attached photos. To visit the dam would be impossible for me alone but as I was guest of a state aluminium company they promptly arranged a visit with a specific vehicle (only one vehicle permit for dam visiting). I think that I should also provide some info of my lunch on a boat restaurant at SanKeShu harbour which I consider spectacular.Through the night, the dam is illuminated in such a way that the crane system and the dam walls remind to clearly the Burj el Arab hotel in Dubai.Great experience!
