The boundary island happened purely by accident. We were one of the last minute planners this year for our chinese new year holidays. I bumped into this option on the internet and while trying to locate the place, considered going for it purely because it was located further out from Sanya & its normally touristy spots frequented by other tourists. To our surprise, this island is a 20-25 min boat ride from the mainland onto this utterly well developed island maintained by the 'boundary island' group. There are several water sports activities, beautifully spaced out as well as equipped rooms to cater to couples, families, larger travelling groups etc. The staff on the island are well spread out and support the needs of the scores of visitors (most of who are day tourists who come in and go out) with a sporting smile. There are the usual 'viewing points' from various spots within the island (which is mountainous) that are a visual treat onto themselves. There are also the specific swimming areas/beach spots that allow one to soak in the white sand and the breezy spirit in the air. There are several seafood restaurant options as well as a western restaurant. The western restaurant was a huge disappointment in an otherwise flawless experience. There was hardly anything on the menu and for us vegetarians, this place that was otherwise providing some hope turned to be a rather sour experience.Nobody understands or speaks English. We happened to be the ONLY non-chinese tourists those 2 days we were on the island. The staff took great care of our needs (as long as we managed to communicate the same well enough). I highly recommend this place, as a definite alternative in case you are visiting sanya for 4-5 days. It is about 1.5 hours away from Sanya city side and one needs to hook up with either the boundary island management for a bus transportation from the city to the ferry point or hire a cab. Within the island, there are electric cars that could help ferry people/luggage around to the various points of interest. Very flexible for us as we were travelling with parents as well as our twin infants. The crowds can be unnerving for some but being Indians, we are used to crowds and therefore were quite at 'home'. Regarding the attractions -- some of them offer a discount for residents, so therefore remember to flash your room keys incase you would like to draw their attention towards this fact and it might help! Having a chinese speaking companion is a huge plus, and my wife who is a level3 chinese 'scholar' (for me:)) was leading all discussions. Despite this, things can be a challenge as the chinese spoken in Hainan Islands is very different from what we are used to up north in Beijing.Complexities apart, this place is very blissful, relatively virgin i believe and deserves attention while things are still maintained as well as they are now :)
